Eight sticks, eight crystals, and a small ceremony that takes about two minutes. Here is how to burn palo santo safely, and what to do with the stone that came with it.
What’s in the kit
- Eight palo santo sticks, each paired with a raw, natural crystal and adorned with dried baby’s breath.
- All eight arranged by color in a premium kraft box.
Palo santo is used to clear and settle a space — a new apartment, a room after a long day, the corner where you meditate. It is a ritual for your environment rather than your skin.
- Set out a heatproof dish. A ceramic bowl, a cast iron tray, an abalone shell, or a small dish with a layer of sand. It needs to be wide enough to catch falling ash.
- Open a window a little. Fresh air moving through the room carries the smoke; a strong draft will just blow the ember around.
- Clear the surface of paper, fabric and anything that can catch.
- Keep the dish out of reach of children and pets.
Lighting and burning
- Hold the stick at about a 45° angle and put just the tip into the flame — not the whole stick.
- Hold it there for 30 to 60 seconds, until the tip catches and you see a small flame.
- Let it burn for a moment, then gently blow the flame out. The tip should stay glowing and start to release smoke.
- Move the smoke through the room — or simply set the stick down in the dish and let the scent settle on its own.
- Rest the stick in the heatproof dish and let the ember go out by itself. If you want it out sooner, press the glowing tip into sand or ash.
How long it burns
Palo santo burns in short bursts. Expect a minute or two of smoke from each lighting, then the ember fades on its own. That is normal — relight the tip whenever you want more. One stick can be lit and relit many times, so the eight in this box will last a long while.
- Never leave a burning stick unattended, not even for a minute.
- Always burn it over a fireproof dish, never directly on a table, shelf or windowsill.
- Keep the smoke away from faces, eyes and pets. If someone in the house has a sensitive chest, burn it in a room they don’t use, or ventilate well.
- Let the stick cool completely before you put it away.
- Keep flame, ember and dish out of reach of children and animals.
Storing it
Keep the sticks somewhere dry, dark and cool. That is what preserves the resin, and the resin is what gives palo santo its scent.
